Costa Maya Map

Mahahual is located in the Southern part of Quintana Roo, know as Quintana Roo Sur, known for its natural beauty. The coastal area of Quintana Roo Sur is referred to as the Gran Costa Maya and includes Lake Bacalar and Chetumal. Mahahual is the heart of the Costa Maya, which is also the name of the cruise ship pier, which you can see in the background of the photo at the top of each page.


  • Felipe Carillo Puerto - Traditional Market and Mayan Culture
  • Chetumal, capital of the state of Quintana Roo for the views on the bay, for the Mayan Cultural Museum and the zoo, which is comprised of local plants and animals from the penninsula. Also worth noting are two Mercados which are open daily until about 2:00 and the ruin of Oxtankah.
  • Punta Herrero, the last of the fishing villages. Punta Herrero is a lobster village at the end of the road. The beauty is stunning and worth the trip.
  • Pedro Santos for pineapple fresh out of the fields
  • Ruin of Chacchoben - (not to be confused with the town of Chacchoben) only an hour from Mahahual, this beautiful ruin is open daily.
  • Xcalak - the little town at the end of the road is a dream for divers, fisherman and daily boat trips to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye in Belize.
  • Lake Bacalar and the town of Bacalar for the "lagoon of 7 colors) and the Fort San Felipe and pirate museum.
